User Tips: Providing a favicon.ico on your Web Site

By Eli A.

If you use Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater, you'll notice that when you visit your Favorites folder, certain bookmarks will have a custom icon next to them. You can create such a custom icon for your site's bookmarks! If you put a favicon.ico file in the root of any website, IE5 will use that icon when adding it to favorites (like in MSN and Yahoo!). This icon need to be a 16x16 icon.

You can learn more about favicon.ico at http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/ShortcutIcon.asp. This link also presents some JavaScript code that will allow a user to add your site to her favorites list through simply clicking a link or button or image!

Happy Programming!
