How can I create a chart or graph that I can display to the user?

[Print this FAQ]

Answer: The following resources were collected by:
J. Paul Schmidt, MBA
Databases on the Web

Making Bar Charts using ASP - 4/21/1999

Creating a Dynamic Bar Chart using a Database Query - 4/21/1999

Creating Dynamic Charts and No-Fuss Graphs bBy John Lofaro - 4/20/2000

Cheap Tricks 3: Fun with Quick Charts
Values shown under each point's name under x-axis. Has demo.

Bar Chart
One value as the max value on the chart is shown. They say it can't accept negative values unless one modifies the code. Code looks well organized.

Creating Bar Charts in ASP
Short code. "All that needs to be done is to scale some images by a given a mount (Example 1) or to include a picture number of times (Example 2)." Shows bars horizontally.

Simple ASPChart Example
Uses the third-party component ASPChart to save chart as a .jpg to disk and then shows the .jpg file. [Note from Bill Wilkinson: ASPChart was DISCONTINUED in April, 1999! You may find some hosting services that still have it, but you can't buy it any more.]

Charting with Pure HTML and ASP by Ulrich Schwanitz
Shows bars horizontally. Lots of variables like min & max.

Generating Bar Graphs with Active Server Pages by Don Franke - 1/6/2000
"Graph using an HTML table with different-colored cells"
Looks like bricks with background showing between each square.

Making Charts in ASP by Chris Payne - Approx. 12/2000
Uses Office Web Components. To use this the server must have some part of Microsoft Office 2000 installed.

J. Paul Schmidt, the person who collected all those, has created his own Bullschmidt Bar Chart that is available at his site. It does a lot of neat things, such are round maxima numbers, handle currency formatting, tooltip values displayed vis mouse-over, and much more. It's pure ASP and free. What more could you ask for?

Finally, not in that category of effort but maybe (??) easier to understand if you are interested in the coding, I offer my own contribution to this question that I created a couple of years ago. You can see it at this page that I "steal" from my son's web site. The ASP Charting demo linked to from that page shows making a connection to and getting data from a text database.
