When I put a value from my database into the value of a form text field, only the first word appears in the browser? What am I doing wrong?

[Print this FAQ]

Answer: A demonstration is often a lot more powerful than a speech. So how about a demonstration?

Please cut and paste this HTML-ONLY page into a file on your machine and display it in your browser. Please do that before you come back and read the comments that follow the HTML code:

************************ FILE: demoValueBug.html ***************

<INPUT Name=Oops Size=40 Value=Interesting that you only see one word >
<INPUT Name=Aha Size=40 Value="But isn't it better this way?" >

*************** end of demo ***********

Did you really do it? Did you see the results?

This isn't an ASP thing, at all! It's simply good old HTML following the rules of HTML.

In HTML, "whitespace" (which includes end-of-line characters as well as tabs and spaces!) is considered to mean "end of element". Unless the whitespace is enclosed in quote marks!

One other thing while we are here: HTML allows either "..." or '...' as quote marks. Inside "...", you can embed any number of ' characters. Inside '...', you can embed any number of " characters. So you've got a lot of flexibility.

Therefore, in ASP code, instead of doing:

  <input type="text" value=<%=someASPVariable%> >

  <input type="text" value="<%=someASPVariable%>" >

(Note the quotes around the outputting of the ASP variable someASPVariable...)
