4GuysFromRolla.com : ASP FAQS : Regular Expressions

What scripting languages can utlitize regular expressions?

[Print this FAQ]

Answer: Currently, all popular server-side ASP scripting languages can use regular expressions. Languages like JScript and PerlScript have regular expression support built-in. With the release of the VBScript and JScript 5.0 scripting engines, Microsoft released a Regular Expression COM component, thereby giving developers the opportunity to use regular expressions with VBScript (or VB, or VC++, or any language that can utilize COM components).

(To get the latest version of the Microsoft Scripting Engines, visit: http://msdn.microsoft.com/scripting/. To determine what server-side scripting language and version you're currently using, check out: Determining the Server-Side Scripting Language and Version!)

A very simple regular expression example in VBScript can be seen below:

  Dim objRegExp
  Set objRegExp = New RegExp

  objRegExp.IgnoreCase = True
  objRegExp.Pattern = "^Scott"

  Dim strStringToSearch
  strStringToSearch = "Scott Mitchell is my name."

  'objRegExp.Test(strStringToSearch) will return true, since
  'it starts with the substring Scott

  Set objRegExp = Nothing 'Clean up!
