Well, it's official. I (Scott Mitchell), and fellow cowebmaster James Atkinson, are authors. We teamed up to write Sams Teach Yourself Active Server Pages 3.0 in 21 Days (ISBN 0672318636). This book is intended for beginning Active Server Pages developers who are ready to build data-driven Web sites using Active Server Pages 3.0!

Sams's 21 Days series books are divided into 21 day-long lessons, further divided into three weeks. Sams Teach Yourself Active Server Pages 3.0 in 21 Days begins Week 1 with an introduction to server-side scripting and the basic theory behind Active Server Pages programming. The bulk of the first week is spent discussing the VBScript scripting language, from variables to control structure, to useful functions, including formatting, math, and string manipulation functions. The week wraps up with a look at object-based programming and discusses the Response object in detail.

The second week begins with a look at using Forms to collect user input, and using the Request object to collect the information entered into Forms. Next, the other uses of the Request object are examined, including the ServerVariables and Cookies collections. This is followed by a look at using Session and Application variables, and a thorough discussion on ways of maintaining state on a Web site. The second week also covers how to read and write text files on the Web server, and how to enhance your ASP pages with the use of standard components, such as the Ad Rotator, Browser Capabilities component, and the Content Linker. The week wraps up with a discussion on how to handle run-time errors gracefully using ASP 3.0's ASPError object.

Week 3, the final week of the book, focuses on integrating databases with ASP pages to create truly data-driven Web sites. A number of database topics are covered in this week, with discussions on relational database concepts, using ADO to query, insert, update, and delete records from a database, how to use SQL syntax to query data, and how to use Forms to create database seach pages. Also discussed in detail are the various ADO objects. The book wraps up with a chapter on ASP application design, highlighting the recommended steps to take when creating a Web application.
