Battle Royale games were a highlight of the esports industry in 2018 and continue with their success in 2019. Successful streamers such as Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Guy “Dr DisRespect” Beahm have reigned supreme on Twitch TV broadcasts, playing titles like Fortnite, Free Fire, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) in front of millions. Moreover, these games have offered incredible prizes for players, like the Fortnite World Cup, which will distribute $112 million in total. PUBG Mobile

Released in 2017, the competitive landscape of PUBG Mobile came to life in 2018. The game gave out $615.2k over six tournaments, with Thailand being the country that won the most with at US $248,000. China comes in second place at US $160,000, and Brazil in fifth place, with US $21,000. It is worth noting that in Asia, the game has caused its fair share of controversy. PUBG Mobile was banned in a city in India. In China, the game was banned and replaced by Game for Peace. Players have also been banned for 10 years for using hacks and illegal scripts.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends was released in 2019 and already has its own competitive landscape. In its launch year alone, the game has distributed US $1.2 million in 54 tournaments. The USA has had the highest winnings total, with US $433.8 thousand. Germany comes second with $100,000. Although its popularity has fallen in recent weeks, Apex did manage to beat out Fortnite for highest Twitch viewership. At E3 2019, it was reported that the game would be updated with new content, including a new character, Wattson. This new content could be crucial for the development of a stable competitive landscape, as the game has received an official ranked mode.

H1Z1 was not the first Battle Royale ever released, but it was one of the pioneers in popularizing the genre. Launched in 2016 by Daybreak, the game has already given out $2 million across 13 tournaments. The USA once again leads among the countries winning the lion’s share of the prize pools, with $1.2 million. The United Kingdom sits at second place with $165,300.

Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG)

PUBG was one of the highlights of 2018 among Battle Royales. Launched in 2017, the game is the second-most well-paying game of the year, with $11.2 million handed out over 139 tournaments. This time, China is the most successful country, with US $2.7 million won in prizes, followed by South Korea with US $2.6 million.

Fortnite is the godfather of the Battle Royale genre. With $32 million distributed across 337 tournaments, Fortnite is also fourth for total prize amounts in the history of the esports industry.
