The Three Scariest Zombies in Videogame History

Zombie games have been around since the earliest consoles arrived. However, it was not until Resident Evil that the survival horror genre we know today took off. Now, a new zombie game is released every few months. That means some scary characters have been thrust onto our screens as each game tries to outdo the last. Below, we pick the three scariest zombies in video game history.

Clickers – The Last of Us

All zombies in The Last of Us have a unique appearance due to the concept of carrying a deadly fungal infection. That makes everyone stand out from their counterparts in others games. There are also numerous types, from the monstrous Rat King to the barely infected Runners.

The opponent that will have you on the edge of your seat during gameplay are the Clickers. ExpressVPN describes them as foes that have been infected for a year or longer, with their main feature being a complete loss of vision. To compensate, they use echolocation to find you, clicking around to hear where fresh meat may lurk. You will hear them before you see them, and it can lead to tense scenes are you remain still and let them stroll past. Luckily, they can be defeated easily with melee weapons and simple guns.

Stalkers – Dead Space

Dead Space by EA is another horror classic that adds a twist to the zombie concept. In this game, the action takes place in space. Zombies are extraterrestrial necromorphs, blending well-trodden undead tropes with sci-fi horror, the likes of which you would find in the movie Alien. Walking around on an empty spacecraft is scary enough, but adding dangerous enemies from space into the mix gets super frightening.

Stalkers are the game’s most fearsome adversaries, mainly because of their tactics. They quietly approach, getting around the back and sides of a player before making their attack. All this is done in packs, so more will be at hand if you spot one. Added to this is that they are extremely freakish, with bird-like heads resembling a plague doctor. They will also emit chilling shrieks when they attack. Exceptionally hardy, it is best for a player to outwit them with sneak attacks.

Sleepers – Back for Blood

The Sleepers from Back 4 Blood don’t sound that bad on paper. They are attached to vertical surfaces and reach out to attack anyone who crosses their line of fire. They will then pin enemies down and stop them from moving. They don’t cause much damage and are extremely easy to kill.

What they do excellently is inject a large dose of the scare factor. Hidden in dimly lit rooms and corners, you seldom see them coming. This results in a huge shock. They may be weak, but they are guaranteed to make you jump out of your skin.

With so many games, everyone will have their favorite. Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead are a few games filled with scary undead characters that didn’t make it to our list. Let us know who your favorite is in the comment or on social media.
